Anemia 1 Flashcards
stem cells = precursor cells and…
differentiate into a specific type of cell
What does albumin do?
Maintains osmotic pressure in the blood
Define Erythropoesis
production of red blood cells
When the body is not adequately oxygenated the kidneys release…
Erythropoietin
Define Anemia
Anything that reduces the function or number of RBC’s.
What triggers and regulates the production of platelets?
Thrombopoietin and it is produced in the liver.
People who have had a spleenectomy (spleen removed) are at risk for what?
Infections. The spleen also helps remove disease causing organisms. If they have no spleen they have an increased risk of infection.
Define intrinsic factors
Things in the blood that start a clotting cascade.
Define extrinsic factors
Things outside of the blood that can also activate platelets.
When platelets plug up happens.
Formation of a fibrin clot….blood coagulation. Basically, blood begins to pool up when a clot occurs.
What test can help you assess a patient’s hematologic status?
Gordon’s Functional Health Patterns Test
True or False: Anticoagulants break down clots.
False. They only prevent clots from forming.
What class of drugs breaks down clots?
Finbrinolytics, AKA Thrombolytics
True or False: Alcoholism harms the liver which interferes with the liver and causes nutritional deficiencies.
True
