What was the Hippocratic collection of books? Why was it important
A collection of books some written by Hippocrates, others by other Doctors
It is the first detailed list of symptoms and treatments.
Doctors continued to use the theories and methods in these books for many centuries
What was the Hippocratic Oath?
This oath was created by Hippocrates to give people confidence in doctors
They have to keep high standards of treatment and behaviour and work for the benefit of their patients, not to make themselves wealthy
What did Hippocrates say about observing and recording? What were the advantages of this
Showed that it was very important to observe and record carefully the symptoms and developments of diseases
Advantages; doctors more likely to chose the right cure if they took care to find the problem
Notes can be used for diagnosis and treatment of future patients
What did Hippocrates say about Natural treatments

Rest and a change in diet and when you feel stronger, take regular exercise
If that doesn’t work, you can bleed or purge to remove excess humours

An imbalance of the 4 humours; too much much or too little of one humour

Blood
Yellow bile
Black bile
Phlegm
Describe how Hippocrates linked the 4 humours to the seasons
Winter; sneezing. Too much phlegm and the body is trying to get rid of it
Spring: Too much blood so they have nosebleeds or suffer from dysentery getting rid of excess blood

It relates to the 4 humours
When it’s hot, we bleed a lot because our body is trying to get rid of excess blood to balance the humours
The cooling down refers to Hippocrates theory that when you are too hot, you need to cool down
What does the Hippocratic collection say you need to do in the Winter and summer?
In Winter; eat as much as possible and drink as little as possible; keep body hot and dry
Summer; eat less, drink more; stay cold and moist
What was surgery like in Ancient Greek?
The mechanics of sugary advanced slightly in Ancient Greece- although it was still a risky procedure
Used it as a last resort - most treatments were don’t outside the body
Surgeons developed good techniques for setting broken bones and in extreme cases would amputate
A range of arugula, instruments were developed, made from iron, steel and brass
