They wore a STOLA which was a long dress
Where did patricians live ?
If they lived in a town then it was called a DOMUS and a VILLA in the country side
Where did the plebeians live ?
They lived in an insula
Where did the poorest plebeian live?
They lived at the very top of the insula and often an entire family had to share a single room
What was life like living in a plebeian insula ?
There was no running water , rubbish was thrown i nto the street below and there was constant danger of fire from cooking as it could easily spread through the wooden structures
How many slaves were there in Rome ?
There were 300,000 slaves
What were the different sources that slaves came from ?
Any prisoners of war , children of slaves , people captured by pirates or bandits while travelling were often sold as slaves , parents in debt sometimes sold their own children into slavery
What age did women usually get married ?
They were usually 14 or 15 years old
Where was the wedding ceremony often held?
The brides house
What was the wife expected to do ?
Run her husband home , make his clothes , supervise slaves and rear the children
What happened to many women at child birth ?
Many died , so men often married many times and girl could easily end up marry a man her fathers age
