Anatomy of skull Flashcards
1
Q
the bony skeleton of the head is divided into what two sections?
A
- cranium
- facial bones
2
Q
the cranium is further divided into the:
A
Calvarium
- (skull cap) whichincludes the frontal, parietal, and occipital bones
Floor
- includes the ethmoid and sphenoid bones
3
Q
frontal bone
A
- the squamous portion forms the forehead
- the horizontal part forms the superior part of each orbit
- articulates with the parietal, sphenoid and ethmoid
4
Q
parietal bones
A
- form the lateral walls and part of the roof of the calvarium
- the widest part of the skull is between the parietal tubercles (eminences)
- together the parietal bones articulate with all the bones of the cranium except the ethmoid
5
Q
occipital bone
A
- the squamous portion is the rounded part superior to the external occipital protuberance or inion
- the foramen magnum (means “great hole”) and it is where spinal cord passes through the skull
- the occipital condyles articulate with the atlas to form the atlanto-occipital joint
6
Q
temporal bones
A
- divided into the squamous, mastoid, and petrous portions
- the squamous portion is more vulnerable to fracture than any other part of the skull
- houses most of the structures of the ear
- forms part of the zygomatic arch
- articulate with the parietals, occipital and sphenoid
7
Q
cristae galley anchors the brain to the floor of the
A
cranium
8
Q
sphenoid bone
A
- has a body, greater wings and lesser wings
- the superior part of the body supports the sella tursica which houses the pituitary gland
- articulates with all of the other 7 cranial bones and 5 facial bones
9
Q
flex means
A
bend
10
Q
extend
A
means raise, straight
11
Q
ethmoid bone
A
- superior surface sits in the ethmoidal notch of the frontal bone, and helps to form the floor of the cranium
- the majority of the ethmoid is inferior to the cranial floor
- forms the medial aspect of the orbits and the lateral aspect of the nasal cavity
- articulates with the sphenoid and the frontal bones only
