Anatomy of Shoulder and Elbow Flashcards
What does the shoulder girdle consist of?
Scapula, clavicle and associated musculature
Where do the muscles that move the scapula (and therefore the entire upper limb) take their attachment from?
The trunk
What is the attachment of the serratus anterior?
Ventro-lateral muscle which attaches to the medial border of the scapula
What is the function of the serratus anterior?
Protracts and stabilised the pectoral girdle
What is the function of the glenohumeral joint?
Involved in the abduction of the humerus and upward rotation of the scapula
What is the function of the deltoid?
Produces the contour of the shoulder
Involved in almost all movements of the arm at the glenohumeral joint, but chiefly abduction
What does the posterior group of short scapular muscles consist of?
Supraspinatus
Infraspinatus
Teres minor
Teres major
What is the function of the posterior group of short scapular muscles?
Abduction and external/lateral rotation
What does the anterior group of short scapular muscles consist of?
Subscapularis
What is the function of the subscapularis?
Internal/medial rotation
What is the large, multi-headed muscle which spans the posterior surface of the humerus?
Triceps brachii
What is the function of the triceps brachii?
Extends the arm and forearm
What is the attachment of the biceps brachii?
Attaches from the scapula to the radius
What is the function of the biceps brachii?
Triceps antagonists
Flexion and supination of the forearm
What is the function of the brachialis muscle?
Flexor of the elbow
