Anatomy FoM 1 Flashcards
Normal variation
variations in the anatomical features of the living body
Abnormal variation
anatomical features that change as a result of injury or disease
Cranial / Cephalic
head region of embryo
Caudal
tail region of embryo
Rostral
beak of embryo region
MRI isotopes used
good for showing detail of soft tissues
- iodine for thyroid function
- xenon gas for lung function
How does artery look different from vein in micrograph of blood vessels?
Artery is fuller, thicker
Vein is more flattened due to less tissue providing rigidity
Typical stain for microscopy
H&E = haematoxylin & eosin
Haematoxylin
- basic and positively charged
- shown as purple/dark blue
Eosin
- acidic and negatively charged
- shown as pink
- e.g. protein
Immunohistochemical stain
antibody against tissue, cell, protein is covalently linked to indicator and can be visualised
Oblique section
microscopic section at angle
Cardiomegaly
enlarged heart due to hypertension, one side heart failure, other organ failure…
Why is wall of cavities and surfaces of organs are lined with membranes?
To reduce friction
