Anatomical terms of movement Flashcards
What is Flexion
Bending or decreasing the angle between bones or parts of the body

What is Extension?
Stretching/streightening or increasing the angle between body parts

What is adduction?
Bringing a bone or part of the body closer to the body (toward the midline in the coronal plane)

What is abduction
Moving a distal part of the body more distally (away from the midline)

What is the midline in the coronal plane of the hands and toes?
- Hands: Middle finger
- Toes: Second toe
What is rotation?
Revolving a body part along its longitudinal axis

What is medial and lateral roation?
What are other synonyms used?
- Medial:(Internal)
- Bringing the anterior surface of a body part closer to the midline
- Lateral (External)
- Bringing the anterior surface of a body part forther away of the midline

What is circumduction?
A combination of flexion/extension and abduction/adduction so that the distal part of the upper limb moves in a circle

What is opposition?
Bringing the pad of the thumb towards the pad of another digit

What is Protraction?
Anterior Movement of A body part

What is Retraction?
Posterior Movement of A body Part

What is elevation?
Bringing a body part upwards
What is Depression?
Movement of a body part inferiorly
What is Pronation?
Rotation of the forearm so that the palm faces posteriorly (or inferiorly if in the supine position)

What is Supination?
Rotation of the forearm along its long axis so that the palm faces anteriorly
