Anaesthetic Emergencies: Respiratory Arrest Flashcards
1
Q
What is the next thing that’ll happen after respiratory arrest?
A
Cardiac arrest
2
Q
Why does respiratory arrest occur? (Name 3 reasons)
A
- Anaesthetic overdose
- Lack of O2 failure of cylinder/circuit error
- Pre-existing respiratory disease/injury
- Side effects of pre-meds or induction agents
3
Q
How do you fix and monitor induction apnoea?
A
- IPPV for short period
- Turn down or switch off vaporiser if necessary
- Check eye position and palpebral reflex
4
Q
What are signs of respiratory arrest?
A
- Dysponea before arrest
- Cyanosis
- Abnormal HR
- Abnormal CRT
- Abnormal Pulse
- Abnormal pupil dilation
5
Q
What should you do if the patient goes into respiratory arrest?
A
- Inform vet
- Turn off vaporiser
- Place ET tube and give 100% oxygen
- Commence IPPV (deliver 1 breath every 6 seconds)
- Check heart to ensure no cardiac arrest
- IV fluids and drugs e.g. reversals
- Keep patient warm
- Once vital signs are normal cease IPPV for 30 seconds to see if patient will breath on their own
