Anaerobes Flashcards
Anaerobe definition?
organisms that cannot grow in the presence of oxygen. Some species can grow in minimal oxygen (2-5%) and others are inhibited by as little as 0.5%.
How many bacteria are in the Anaerobes group?
5 Gram Neg Bacilli
7 Gram Pos Bacilli
3 Gram Pos Cocci
1 Gram Neg Cocci
Which anaerobes are aerotolerant?
Actinomyces and Lactobacillus are aerotolerant GPB because they will grow in both environments
What are the anaerobic 5 GNB?
Bacteroides fragilis Fusobacterium nucleatum Fusobacterium necrophorum Prevotella intermedia Porphyromonas asaccharolyticus
What are the 7 Anaerobic GPB?
Clostridium tetani Clostridium botulini Clostridium perfringens Clostridium difficile Propionbacterium Actinomyces Lactobacillus
What are the 3 Anaerobic GPC?
Peptostreptococcus
Peptinophilus asaccharolyticus
Finegoldia magna
What is the 1 anaerobic GNC?
Veillonella
What is the MCC of anaerobic infection?
Bacteroides fragilis
Bacteroides fragilis causes what type of infection?
Extremly virulent
Causes tissue necrosis
MCC of infection is after abdominal trauma
but it can also cause skin infections
Bacteroides fragilis gram stain?
GNB with rounded ends
Bacteroides fragilis important biochem tests?
grows in 20% bile and bile esculin positive
Bacteroides fragilis grows as a shiny gray colony on what media?
ABAP
Also Grows on BBE and LKV
MC Clostridium isolated in lab?
Clostridium perfringens
Clostridium perfringens causes what type of infections?
myonecrosis (gas gangrene)
food poisoning that is not usu severe, self-limiting
infections where there is abdominal trauma
Contributes to Clostridium perfringens virulence?
produces several toxins and lots of gas
Clostridium perfringens gram stain?
LG GPB that line up in boxcar formation
Clostridium perfringens on BAP?
double zone of hemolysis and anaerobic BAP
Clostridium perfringens on Egg yolk agar?
demonstrates a yellow halo because it is lecithinase + and lipase -
Fusobacterium nucleatum Gram stain?
Thin GNB with tapered ends
Fusobacterium necrophorum Gram stain?
pleomorphic spindles GNB with pointed ends
Prevotella intermedia Gram stain?
GNB that is pigmented and saccharolytic
Porphyromonas asaccharolyticus Gram stain?
GNB that is also pigmented, but assaccharolytic
Clostridium tetani Gram stain?
GPB with “tennis racket” morphology
Clostridium botulini Gram stain?
LG GPB–chiclets
Clostridium difficile Gram stain?
GPB
Propionibacterium Gram stain?
non spore forming GP bacillus
“pom-poms”
Peptostreptococcus Gram stain?
Anaerobic Gram Positive Cocci
Parvimonas micra Gram stain?
GP cocci
Veionella Gram stain?
gram negative cocci
can be seen in pairs, chains
