What were women like before WW1?
Few women had jobs and they were expected to wear restrictive clothing. They couldn’t drink or smoke in public and had to have a chaperone if they were meeting a man.
What were women like during WW1?
90000 American women were enlisted in the army during WW1 and they were campaigning for women’s suffrage.
What were flappers?
They were middle class urban women who had money and time. Their fashion was daring and they drank and smoked in public. Famous people like Clara Bow encouraged flappers.
How were flappers treated/seen by others?
Many attitudes towards women didn’t change and flappers weren’t welcome. In Chicago women were fined $10-$100 for wearing short skirts or bearing their arms. Mothers formed the Anti-Flirt League to protect their daughters.
How did women become more powerful?
Many women gave up working after getting the vote more skilled women were hired. By 1928 women earned 39% of college degrees however females were still paid less than men.
