They were promised a better life with more money and land and could escape wars and poverty

Anyone can immigrate to America
What happened at Ellis Island?
Immigrants were bought in on boats and had to answer questions and pass health tests to get in to America. In 1911 2% of people were turned away
What laws were brought in to restrict immigration?
Literacy act 1917 - reading and writing tests
Emergency quota act 1921- only 3% of the total population were allowed into America
National origins act 1924 - reduced immigrants to 150000 per year and only 2% of the population
What were the Palmer raids?
Palmer raids were conducted under the leadership of A Mitchell Palmer to arrest and capture communists. Over 10000 suspected communists were arrested.
Who were Sacco and Vanzetti and what happened to them?
Sacco and Vanzetti were Italian immigrants that moved to America. They were accused of shooting 2 people during an armed robbery. The judge was racist because they were immigrants and they were executed.
What was the Red Scare?
People were scared of communism after the Russian revolution. The rich were scared that they would lose wealth and everything was blamed on Communists.
What were anarchists?
People who actively showed anti government ideas.
