What laws were passed for prohibition?
The 18th Amendment banned selling of alcohol in 1919 and Volstead act meant that products with more than 0.5% alcohol were banned.
How did people go against prohibition?
Speakeasies were used to secretly drink alcohol in disguised bars and rum runners smuggled rum from Mexico. Bootleggers also smuggled in alcohol.
Why weren’t prohibition agents very good?
There wasn’t enough agents for the people and so they were hard to control. They were also bribed for the alcohol back as they were paid a lot.
Why did prohibition end?
Lots of gangs were formed and there was a lot of violence. The government couldn’t tax alcohol and so they were losing money.
What was the St Valentines Day massacre?
On 14th February 1929 7 men were murdered in a pub by 4 of Al Capone’s men.
Who was in the Ohio gang?
It was led by Warren Harding, who was President from 1921, and contained Albert Fall, Charles Forbes, Edwin Denby and Harry Daugherty.
What was the Teapot Dome Scandal?
Albert Fall leased out the Army’s oil fields for bribes. They shouldn’t have been leased out and if they were then they should have been auctioned. Albert Fall was fined 400000 and sentenced to a year in prison.
What reasons were there for prohibition?
The Women’s Christian Temperance Union campaigned for prohibition. Religious groups saw alcohol as the sin of evil. There were links found between alcohol consumption and abuse of wives. Brewers were German and so it was seen as unpatriotic to drink beer.
