Grand Jury
A panel of people that give permission for a criminal indictment
Indictment (results in a grand jury trial)
The formal charging or accusation of a criminal
Probable cause
Reasonable and strong evidence
Warrant
A formal document that is:
- used to legal search and seize someone’s property.
- Obtained by probable cause
Search and Seizure
- To look through and take
- Cannot be done w/o a warrant
Cruel and unusual punishment
Unethical, immoral punishment
Quarter
House (quartering soldiers not allowed under 3rd Amendment)
Due process of law
The rights entitled by the law (ex: calling witnesses, having an impartial jury, having an attorney, confronting accusers)
Double jeopardy
Being on trial twice for the same case (forbidden by the 5th Amendment)
Self-incrimination
To testify against oneself (not necessary under the Amendment)

Payment
Eminent domain
The government’s right to take private property for public use (must give just compensation)
Treason
The crime of betraying one’s country
Compulsory
Mandatory by law
Bail
Money or property given to court in exchange for being released from jail
