Intelligence tests
Tests designed to measure a person’s general mental abilities
Intelligence
A general term referencing to the ability or abilities involved in learning and adaptive behavior
STERNBERGS TRIARCHIC THEORY OF INTELIGENCE
STERNS
Componential intelligence
Compare, contrast, explain, analyze
Experimental intelligence
Ability to use knowledge and experiences in new creative ways
Contextual intelligence
Street smarts, real world situations
THEORY OF MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES - GARDNER
Linguistic/ verbal Logic/math Visual/spatial Music Bodily-Kinesthetics Interpersonal Intrapersonal Naturalist
Binet-Simon scale
The first test of intelligence, developed for testing children
Intelligence quotient (IQ)
An index of intelligence defined as mental age divided by chronological age, multiplied by 100
Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale
Termans adaptation of the Binet-Simon scale
Weschler adult intelligence scale
Third edition- rates verbal and performance intelligence
Wechsler intelligence scale for children
Verbal and performance
Fluid intelligence
Involves reasoning ability, memory capacity and speed of info processing
Crystallized intelligence
Ability to apply acquired knowledge and skills in problem solving
Group tests
Any intelligence test that can be administered to a group of people with minimal supervision
Performance tests
Intelligence tests that minimize the use of language
Culture- fair tests
Test designed to minimize the importance of skills and knowledge that may be more common in some cultures than others
Reliability
Ability of a test to produce consistent and stable scores
Split half reliability
Method of determining test reliability by dividing the test into two parts and checking the agreement of scores on both parts
Test retest reliability
Correlation between persons score on 2 separate administrations of test
Equivalent form reliability
Correlation between performance on different test forms
Inter eater reliability
Degree to which 2 or more independent observers agree
Intra- rater reliability
Degree of agreement among repeated administrations of a diagnostic test performed by single rater
Correlation coefficient
Statistical measure of the degree of association between 2 variables
Validity
Ability of a test to measure what it has been designed to measure
Face validity
The degree to which a test, subjectively appears to measure the variable or construct, that it’s supposed to measure
Construct validity
How well a test or tool measures the constructs that it was designed to measure
Content validity
Refers to a tests having an adequate sample of questions measuring the skills or knowledge it is supposed to measure
Criterion- related validity
Validity of a test as measured by a comparison of the test score and independent measures of what the test is designed to measure
Predictive validity
Measure of future performance
Flynn effect
Performance on intel tests have been rising steadily
Tacit knowledge
Knowledge one needs for success in completing particular practical tasks
Mental retardation
The presence of a developmental disability, an IQ score below 70, or a significant impairment of adaptive behavior
Giftedness
Refers to superior IQ combined with demonstrated or potential ability in such areas as academic aptitude, creativity and leadership
Creativity
The ability to produce novel and socially valued ideas or objects
Heritability
Measure of how much of a traits variation is explained by genetic factors
Range 0-1 genetics
