Altimeter Setting Procedures Flashcards
How is height expressed/reported when flying in the Standard Pressure Region?
Use the term Flight Level (FL)
Example: FL250 represents an altimiter indication of 25 000ft ASL
FL050 represents an altimeter indication of 5000ft ASL
When flying in the Altimeter Setting Region, what is the departure procedures? How accurate does an altimeter need to be for an IFR flight?
Prior to takeoff, set the altimeter to either the current setting of that aerodrome or, if one isnt available, to the elevation of that aerodrome.
An altimeter needs to be accurate to within +/- 50 feet for an IFR flight
When flying in the Altimeter Setting Region, what is the en route procedure?
- The altimeter shall be set to the current altimeter setting of the nearest station along the route of flight
OR
- If such stations are more than 150NM apart, then the nearest station/airport to the ROUTE of flight
In the Altimeter Setting Region, what is the arrival procedure?
When approaching the aerodrome of intended landing, the altimeter shall be set to the current setting for that aerodrome, if availible.
For how long is an altimeter setting reading/publication valid/current?
It is considered current for up to 90 minutes
An altimeter setting is valid for 90 minutes but in what two scenarios should care be exercised?
When the altimere setting is older than 60 minutes or when pressure has been reported as falling rapidly
An altimeter setting that is too high is going to read ___ _____
An altimeter setting that is too low is going to read ___ ___
Too high
Too low
In a situation where the altimeter setting is within the 90 min validity periode, but the pressure has been reported to be falling rapidly…IF you have an idea of how much it has been dropping hour by hour, what rule of thumb can you use to make a rough calculation of the current altimeter reading?
Take your Decision Hight (DH) / Minimum Descent Altitude (MDA) and add 10ft for every 0.01 inches of mercury the pressure has dropped
** Remember to factore in where you are and how long it will take to get to your dest/arrival time
When an authorized remote altimeter setting is used on an approach plate, how do you calculate the altitude correction?
There will be a specific correction to use on the approach plate
Where is the Standard Pressure Region and what altimeter setting should you use?
The SPA is found at or above 18 000ft ASL (FL180) over SDA and in all of NDA.
Your altimeter will be set to 29.92 inches of mercury (1013.2 mb)
Flight Levels (FL) are expressed in feet above…
Sea level
What is 29.92 inches of mercury expressed in millibars?
1013.2 mb
In the Standard Pressure Region, prior to takeoff, what shall the PIC set the altimeter to?
The current altimeter setting of the aerodrome or, if that isnt availible, to the elevation of the aerodrome
1) After taking off in the Standard Pressure Region, when do you set the altimeter to 29.92?
2) If the flight is to be conducted above FL180, when should you set the altimeter to 29.92?
1) Imediately prior to reaching the flight level at which the flight is to be conducted
2) Reset the altimete to 29.92 AT FL180
Just before descending to land in the Standard Pressure Region, the altimeter shall be set to…
…the current altimeter setting of the aerodrome, if available.
