Q

How does light control the sleep wake cycle

A
  • Light enters eyes and falls on the retina
  • the retina sends a signal through the optic nerve to the superachiasmatic nucleus
  • the superachiasmatic nucleus then sends a message to the pineal gland in the hypothalamus telling it to reduce or increase the production of melatonin

Q

Sleep Apnoea

A

Periodically stop breathing either due to obstruction or central sleep (Due to a delayed signal to the brain)
Results in high blood pressure and heart problems
Sleeping on side, weight loss and C-PAP

16
Q

Narcolepsy

A
  • The irresistible urge to sleep
  • Sleep attacks
  • Cataplexy (Loss of muscle tension)
  • Sleep paralysis
  • No cure - simulant drugs
17
Q

Insomnia

A

difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or waking up

  • Psychological, lifestyle and environmental causes
  • Stimulus control and sleep restrictions therapy
18
Q

Stimulus control

A

Bedroom used for sleep and sleep only to create association

19
Q

Sleep restriction therapy

A

You have to get up at a certain time no matter what - create sleep debt

20
Q

Bright light therapy

A

Realligns the sleep-wake cycle

21
Q

Sympathic

A

Staying alive, pupils dialate, inhibits saliva, dilates bronchi, stops bladder contraction

cannot be maintained for long periods of time

22
Q

Parasympathic

A

please calm down
Stimulates slaliva
Slows heart beat
Contracts bladder (20-50 mins)

23
Q

Difficult tasks

A

Moderate to low arousal

24
Q

Easy tasks

A

Moderate to high arousal

25
Q

Adrenaline

A

Increases arousal immediately
responsible for the immediate reactions
increases heart rate and energy

26
Q

Norepinephrine

A

back up for adrenaline

27
Q

Cortisol

A

Maintains fluid balance and blood pressure as immune system weakens

28
Q

Introverts need

A

lower arousal levels

29
Q

Extroverts need

A

Higher arousal levels

30
Q

3 stages of stress

A

Alarm
Resistance
Exhaustion

31
Q

Alarm

A

fight or flight -

32
Q

resistance

A

Lasts a few weeks
Adapts to continuing stress
Body remains at elevated arousla but eventually the body has to clam down

33
Q

Exhaustion

A
High arousal can't be maintained
Immune system weakens
Anxiety and depression
Drinking, smoking,
the bodies reserves are depleted which can lead to cardiovascular issues
34
Q

Problem focused interventions for stress

A

Fix the situation

35
Q

Emotion focused interventions for stress

A

Fix the mindset
