Explain the climate of Alsace
Driest wine region in France. Alsace is protected from the rain to the west with the Vosges mountain, acting as a rain shadow.
Semi continental climate with arsh winter and very warm summer.
The northern latitude equates to added hours of sunshine to allow full ripeness.
Explain the geology of Alsace
The best vineyards lies on the foothills of the Vosges with an exposition south to south east facing or warmer east exposure to max hours sunshine.
Mosaic of soils, but in general:
Steeper slopes= schist, granite, volcanic Sed
Lower slopes= limestone base
Plain= richer alluvial clay and gravel soils.

What are the differences between gentil and edelzwicker?
Gentil= as to have at least 50% of the 4 nobles grape and other. Edelzwicker= "noble mixture" in fact it's an inexpensive blend of any grape. Does not have to be vintage dated.

2009= outstanding vintage healthy grapes therefore pure varietal character. Overall less acidic than 2008 2010= good classical vintage with acidity and concentration 2011= good vintage in quaffable and faster developing way.

2006= not a good vintage due to rain in September that caused a lot of rot
2007= very good classical vintage, very long ripening period and not excessive rain
2008= outstanding classical vintage, no severe heat spells and therefore a great vintage with a lot of concentration and a balanced high acidity.

2003= not a good vintage due to incredibly hot and most of the wine are already past the top
2004= good vintage summer offered mixed weather. Picked at cool temp. The wine are logger in body with fresher acidity.
2005= good vintage very warm ripening conditions brought fruity and full bodied wines.

2000= very good vintage
2001= outstanding vintage warn but dry conditions in the end and ripening period brought ripe, healthy grapes. Ripe and full bodied wines.
2002= good vintage less concentrated and focused as 2001.

Rouge= 100% PN. Min 10.5% alc max Rs 3G/l
