Alloys (Paper 1) Flashcards
1
Q
Why are alloys harder than pure metals?
A
Pure metals are malleable (easily shaped by hammering) because they have a regular arrangement of identical atoms. The layers can slide over eachother.
2
Q
How are alloys made?
A
By adding another element to a metal. Could be a non-metal or a metal.
3
Q
What do the different sized atoms in an alloy do?
A
They make it more difficult for the layers to slide over eachother.
4
Q
What is steel made of?
A
Iron and Carbon
5
