Allergy / Immunology Flashcards
IgE mediated food reaction sx (8)
Flushing Urticaria rash angioedema vomiting bronchospasm abd cramping anaphylaxis
Non-IgE mediated food reaction (i.e. food protein colitis) (3)
Hematochezia
abd pain
FTT
Tx for non-IgE mediated food reaction?
Change to hypoallergenic or amino-acid based formula
Only proven method to reduce dust mite allergen?
Reduce air humidity to <50%. Mattress/pillow covers / washing linens at high heat / removing stuffed animals / carpet / vacuuming do not alone decrease significantly. HEPA filters stop airborne dust mites but most originate in bedding.
Definition of atopy?
A genetic predisposition to develop allergic diseases such as eczema / asthma / food allergy / allergic rhinitis
Variable that has been clearly shown to reduce the risk of atopy in the future?
Early child care exposure
30-40% of kids w/mod to severe eczema have this underlying disease?
IgE mediated food allergy
What are the 5 foods responsible for 90% of IgE mediated food allergies?
1) Wheat
2) Soy
3) Peanut
4) Milk
5) Eggs
Indications for allergic immunotherapy (4):
1) Allergic asthma
2) allergic rhinitis
3) allergic conjunctivitis
4) stinging insect hypersensitivity
Immediate tx of anaphylaxis:
IM epi
Criteria for CVID (3):
1) Low Ig levels (>2SD below mean)
2) Poor Ab response to vaccines
3) Exclusion of other causes of hypogammaglobulinemia
Medications that cause hypogammaglobulinemia (5):
1) Corticosteroids
2) Phenytoin
3) Captopril
4) Sulfasalazine
5) Anti-malarials
Infections that cause hypogammaglobulinemia (3):
1) HIV
2) congenital rubella
3) EBV
Congenital causes of hypogammaglobulinemia (5):
1) CVID
2) X-linked hypogammaglobulinemia
3) Hyper-IgM
4) SCID
5) Trisomy 21
Malignancies that cause hypogammaglobulinemia (3):
1) CLL, 2) NHL, 3) B-cell malignancies
