Q

What are lab components and how are they represented in Epic?

A

Lab components are the discrete result values that make up a test. Each component is a
separate record in the Result Component (LRR) master file

Q

components have their own way of getting grouped already: base name and
common name. Both names are used to group components when clinicians review results, but each is
used in a slightly different way.

Q

Base name ﴾I LRR 45﴿

A

Used to group components that share a result type. These components might have different resulting processes ﴾such as a cheek swab versus a blood sample﴿, and they might have different reference ranges and units of measure.

Because reference ranges can be different across components with the same base name, they can’t be used to trend results over time. Instead, the base name is most commonly used to display labs in things like SmartLinks that can easily show the reference range in‐line with the result

Q

Common name ﴾I LRR 46﴿

Components that share a common name have similar resulting processes, reference ranges, and units of measure, so clinicians can see trends in the results over time. Common name is a narrower way to group components than base name.

A

How do you find the common name of a component? If you don’t know the component record’s full name and/or ID, you can find its common name in a patient’s chart. 4. Keep your criteria record open and Chart Search > Encounter. 5. Search for your Nadia patient and open the most recent encounter. 6. Chart Review > Labs tab. 7. Single‐click one of Nadia’s resulted lab orders. Evaluating Allergies and Lab
