Management of allergic rhinitis
- Avoiding triggers
- Nasal irrigation with saline
- Intra-nasal or oral anti-histamines
If initial measures are ineffective then
- regular intranasal steroids
(Oral steroids can be used in severe cases which affect quality of life)
Referral to ENT should be considered if:
- There are red flag features suggesting an alternative/serious diagnosis
- Refractory cases
- Allergen testing is needed
Types of allergic rhinitis
seasonal: symptoms occur around the same time every year. Seasonal rhinitis which occurs secondary to pollens is known as hay fever
perennial: symptoms occur throughout the year
occupational: symptoms follow exposure to particular allergens within the work place

sneezing
bilateral nasal obstruction
clear nasal discharge
post-nasal drip
nasal pruritus
