Alkenes Flashcards
1
Q
Why are alkenes vulnerable to to electrophilic attack
A
The C=C double bond has high electron density so is vulnerable to attack by electrophiles
2
Q
Outline the order of stability for carbocations
A
Most stable: tertiary
Secondary
Least stable: primary
3
Q
What makes a carbocation more stable than another
A
- the major product will be the more stable carbocation
- because the methyl groups on either/one side of the positive carbon are electron releasing and reduce the charge on the ion
- inductive effect of alkyl groups
4
Q
How are addition polymers formed
A
From alkenes. The double bond breaks
5
Q
Why are addition polymers unreactive
A
Due to strong C-C and C-H bonds
6
Q
What are the uses of poly(chloroethene) PVC when a plasticiser is added
A
- when a plasticiser is added the intermolecular forces between polymer chains are weakened
- which allows the polymer to be more flexible
- so it can be used in electrical wires, and waterproof clothes
