Do low carb diets work?
A
- Most beneficial to decrease triglycerides and increase HDL
- Works best with veg protein
- Ideally carbs should be between 50-55% both above and below this there is an increase in mortality (PURE study)

How is increased dietary fibre and whole grain beneficial?
A
- Protects against CVD, type 2 diabetes and colorectal/breast cancer
- Risk reduction is greatest with intake of fibre between 25-29g a day

Do intermittent fasting diets work?
A
No - they encourage binge eating on the day off

Are vegetarian diets beneficial?
A
- Not necessarily, you can have a balanced diet eating meat or eating no meat
- Vegetarians can still eat a large amount of unhealthy foods
- Red meat does have adverse effects including increased risk of CHD, type 2 diabetes and cancer

Are liquid meal replacement diets good?
A
- Depends on the drink, and whether it has the nutrients we need to consume in a whole day
- Easier to stick to, as no conscious effort has to be made to choose food
- Only a short term measure, need support when going off the drinks
