Algebra Flashcards
How do you multiply powers?
When multiplying powers with the same base, add the exponents and keep the base the same. 2^3 x 2^4 = 2^7
What is a power?
A power is a product of identical factors and consists of two parts, a base and an exponent. 2^3 The exponent tells us how many factors of the base to multiply.
How do you divide powers?
When dividing powers with the same base, subtract the exponents and keep the base the same. 2^5/2^3 = 2^2
How do you find the power of a power?
When finding the power of a power, keep the base and multiply the exponents. (2^2)^3 = 2^6
What are the parts of a term?
The coefficient, which is the number, and the variable, which is υ (1 or more variables) plus the exponent if one exists.
What is a term?
An expression formed by the product of numbers and/or variables.
They are separated by addition and/or subtraction. 3u^5+5u
What is a polynomial?
An algebraic expression consisting of one or more terms connected by addition or subtraction operators. There are different types: mono=1, bi=2, tri=3, four-term=4 and so on.
What is the degree of a term?
The sum of the exponents on the variables in a term. u= degree 1, u^2 = 2, uy^3 = 4
What is the degree of a polynomial?
The degree of the highest-degree term.
Example-2u^3+4u^2: the degree is 3
What are like terms?
Terms that have the same variable and same exponent.
Example- 2u, 179u; -90y^2, 3y^2; zxy^6, 78zxy^6
How do you add like terms?
By adding up all the fixed costs and variable costs.
How do you simplify a polynomial expression?
By adding or subtracting like terms.
What happens when there are brackets, but you can’t do anything?
You drop the brackets that don’t do anything.
What do you do when simplifying?
Look for the highest exponent first. (It looks more organized)
How do you subtract a polynomial?
You add the opposite.
