Alerting System Introduction Flashcards
What does the safe operation of any aircraft require?
Awareness of the presence of non-normal situations
What does the alerting require?
Provides both visual and audio indications to the pilot if there is a malfunction so that appropriate action can be taken.
What is the color coding of the visual indications?
1) Red lights for warnings
2) Amber lights for cautions
What are the glare shield “attention getter” lights called? When will they illuminate?
- Master Warning and Caution Lights
- Alerting system detects a system malfunction
Where are individual warnings and cautions located?
Single CWP
How long does the warning or caution light remain illuminated?
Until the malfunction has been resolved.
What are the two different types of aural alerts?
1) Aural Warnings
2) Aural Cautions
What are the 4 types of aural warnings?
1) A bell
2) A computerized voice
3) A siren
4) A wailer
What should the pilot prioritize with alerts?
- Warnings
- Cautions
- Advisories
What is a crucial thing the pilot must do before each flight relating to alerts?
Test them with self test button.
Where is alert testing buttons found on the PC-21?
ENGINE console
What does the FIRE TEST switch do?
Tests the fire alert system, specifically:
- Engine hot section fire wire
- Attention getters
- Amber EIRCAS caution on the MFD and DWP
- Grey FIRE 1 ALRT advisory
- Grey FIRE 2 ALRT advisory
- Repeated warning gong audio tone
What does the LAMPS TEST pushbutton do?
- All DWP captions
- Landing gear position position indicators and red handle warning lamp
- AOA indexer lamps
- FMS annunciator lamps
- ELT test lamp
- All green, red, amber and cyan panel switch annunciators
- Caution chime audio tone
- LAMPS TESTS advisory is also displayed on the MFD
What design philosophy is used for aircraft related to fire?
- To prevent it
2. Provide adequate fire protection
What does a basic Fire Detection and Protection System consist of?
- Visual and aural warnings
- Series of heat or smoke sensors
- An extinguishing system
What are the most common causes of aircraft fires?
- Fuel leaks in the vicinity of hot equipment
2 Hot gas leaks from engines or ducting, impinging on inflammable materials - Electrical or mechanical malfunctions in equipment.
Where are fire detection systems commonly deployed?
- Engine bays
- The APU enclosure
- Significant pieces of high-energy equipment.
What do Fire and smoke detector systems normally do?
- Activation of the master warning light
- Illumination of a red warning caption on the CWP accompanied by a warning horn
- An individual warning light to identify which compartment or area is affected.
What are some components of an Engine Fire Indicating System?
- Fire extinguisher control handles or switches
- Fire warning light to clearly identify which engine fire detector has actuated
- Master warning light
- Audible warning horn or bell
What are the two types of fire detection systems?
- Unit Detectors, normally temperature-sensitive switches or thermocouples
- Continuous Loop Detectors, will detect an overheat condition anywhere along its length
What is a two-shot fire bottle?
- Method of fire extinguishing
- The two shot fire bottle has two firing heads, with each head containing an electrically-actuated explosive squib cartridge.
What will there be on most multi-engine aircraft?
One bottle for each engine
What is the multi-engine fire extinguisher system?
Designed to extinguish a fire by either:
- A dual discharge head with separate plumbing leading to the opposite engine
- A transfer valve that directs that agent to the other engine.
What are high-rate discharge extinguishers?
- Fire extinguishers that rapidly discharge an extinguishing agent into the nacelle area.
- Agents are toxic so should be avoided.
What are employed for most flight line environments?
Hand held fire extinguishers
What should you don when operating fire safety equipment?
PPE
