Aldehydes + Ketones Flashcards
1
Q
Aldehydes + Ketones: IMF’s
A
dipole - dipole
2
Q
Aldehydes + Ketones: Soluble
A
- soluble due to H-bonding with water
- as chain length increases solubility decreases
3
Q
Reduction of aldehydes
A
primary alcohol
4
Q
Reduction of ketones
A
secondary alcohol
5
Q
Aldehydes + HCN
- (KCN in H2SO4)
A
2-hydroxy____nitrile
(chain increases by 1)
6
Q
Ketones + HCN
- (KCN in H2SO4)
A
2-hydroxy-2____alkyls
7
Q
Testing for Aldehydes + Ketones
A
1) 2-4 DNPH - forms an orange/yellow/red precipitate
- cool, filter, dry and then compare the melting temps with the data book
2) Iodoform reaction (I2 + NaOH)
forms pale yellow precipitate
