Alcohols Flashcards
What are primary alcohols oxidized to in the presence of strong oxidizing agents?
carboxylic acids
What are secondary alcohols oxidized to in the presence of strong oxidizing agents?
ketones
What does PCC do?
converts alcohol —> aldehydes
What does chromium trioxide?
converts alcohol —-> carboxylic acids
What is a quinone?
a benzene ring with two carbonyl groups in -para position
How is a quinone created?
by reacting a phenol with oxidizing agents
What is phylloquinone and what does it do?
Vitamin K; important for photosynthesis and the carboxylation of some of the clotting factors in blood
What do quinones do?
important in the electron transport chain of photosynthesis and aerobic respiration
What does ubiquinone?
aka coenzyme Q; vital electron carrier associated with Complexes I, II, and III of the electron transport chain
What is ubiquinol?
the reduced form of ubiquinone
How are hydroxyquinones created?
produced from oxidation of quinones
What does CrO3 with H2SO4 in acetone do?
converts primary alcohol to carboxylic acid
