Alcohol dependence

A

~ cluster of behavioural, cognitive & physiological factors that typically include strong desire to drink alcohol, tolerance to its effects, & difficulties controlling its use. Someone who is alcohol-dependent may persist in drinking, despite harmful consequences, such as physical or mental health problems.

Wernicke encephalopathy tx

A

~ Parenteral thiamine, followed by oral thiamine
~ Prophylactic oral thiamine given to harmful or dependent drinkers if in acute withdrawal, or before & during assisted alcohol withdrawal
~ Parenteral thiamine available as part of vitamin B substances with ascorbic acid preparation.
