Alcian blue Flashcards
What can you use Alcian blue for?
With pH 2.5 it will stain both sulphated and carboxylated acid mucopolysaccharides and glycoproteins.
At pH 1.0 it will only stain sulphated acid mucopolysaccharides, so the more highly acidic mucins.
Processed tissue that was fixed in zinc formalin is very hard and brittle. The stained sections show microscopic chatter. This problem might be corrected in the future by:
A. leaving the tissue in the fixative for less than 4 hours
B. treating the tissue for removal of pigment
C. placing the tissue in a buffer solution after fixation
D. selecting a better schedule for processing
D. selecting a better schedule for processing
The tissue has been over-dehydrated or over-processed due to long exposure to dehydrants and clearants. The processing schedule should be adjusted.
The quality management assessment process that is designed as an educational program to improve the preparation of histologic slides in laboratories nationwide is called:
A. ASCP Board of Certification examinations
B. NAACLS accreditation for training programs
C. CAP laboratory inspections
D. NSH/CAP HistoQIP challenges
D. NSH/CAP HistoQIP challenges
The NSH/CAP HistoQIP reviews slides from laboratories in a voluntary, peer reviewed educational program for improvement of quality across laboratories.
A protozoan that causes outbreaks of severe and relentless diarrhea among patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is:
A. Cryptosporidium muris
B. Leishmania donovani
C. Giardia lamblia
D. Toxoplasma gondii
Cryptosporidium is one of a group of protozoa that causes severe and relentless outbreaks of diarrhea among AIDS patients.
The enzyme involved in the technique shown below belongs to which of the following classes?
A. lipases
B. hydrolases
C. transferases
D. oxidoreductases
The enzyme involved in the technique shown (ATPase) belongs in the hydrolase class.
What is the staining technique in the image and does the tissue require fixation?
NADH diaphorase technique and it does not require fixed tissue, rather frozen unfixed tissue.
