Alchohol Flashcards
1
Q
Definition of Tolerance (2)
A
- Decrease in Brain Sensitivity to Alchohol
- Higher BACS are needed to produce the same effect of alchohol when you first used it
2
Q
Definition of BAC (4)
A
- Blood Alchohol Content
- Amount of alcohol in a person’s bloodstream
- Rises even after drinking, for alcohol from the stomach continues to enter the bloodstream
- Each standard drink = .02 to your BAC level
3
Q
What affects BAC levels? (Only Read Through)
A
- Amount of alcohol you drink
More drink, higher BAC - Amount of food you eat before or while you drink alcohol
Food in stomach slows down alchohol absorption - Length of time you drink alcohol
Longer you drink, the higher your BAC - Body weight
Larger body weights - Lower BAC
Greater volume for the alcohol to be distributed which results in lower BAC levels - Gender
Females have a smaller body mass more body fat, lowering proportion of total body water to distribute alcohol
4
Q
Definition of Binge Drinking (3)
A
- 5 or more drinks in a row
- Fast Consumation
- Causes breakdown of all body systems, leading to death
5
Q
Definition of Blackout (3)
A
- No memory during time of drinking
- Memory loss lasts a few hours or days
- Memory is lost or never recorded by the brain
6
Q
Definition of Oxidation (4)
A
- Occurs in the Liver
- Process of getting alchohol out of blood
- Broken down into water, carbon dioxide and energy
- 1 Drink/Hour
7
Q
Definition of Cirrhosis (2)
A
- Health Liver Tissue is replaced with Scar Tissue
- Liver won’t function well
8
Q
Definition of Fetal Alchohol Syndrome (3)
A
- Occurs when drinking while pregnant
- Serious Health Problems in the Baby
- Deformed Bodies, Poor Coordination, Learning Problems and Short Memories
9
Q
Effects on the Brain (Read Through)
A
- Slows Reaction Time
- Blurred Vision
- Lack of Concentration
- Impairs Desicion Making
- Reduciton in Coordination
10

Definition of DWI (3)
A
- Driving While Intoxicated
- 0.08 BAC or Higher
- Liscence Revoktion, Fine, Jail Time
11
Q
Definition of New York’s Zero Tolerance Law (3)
A
- Drivers under the age of 21
- BAC of 0.02 - 0.07
- Licsence Revoktion, Fine
