al-duwa' Flashcards
epinephrine (or adrenaline) effects on the body:
https://allergyasthmanetwork.org/anaphylaxis/what-is-epinephrine/
Makes the heart to pump faster and harder. This raises your blood pressure and circulates blood more quickly throughout the body
dilates the airways and may reduce swelling
pupils in your eyes to dilate
skin goes pale as bl is diverted to major organs
increased bl flow to muscles
may cause anxiety
begins to work immediately but full effect may take 5-10 mins. begins to wear off in 20-30 mins so its possible a second dose would be needed (with medical control approval)
Anaphylaxis is diagnosed when symptoms appear on two or more body organ systems. Anaphylaxis symptoms involve:
skin: itching, redness, swelling, hives that are widespread
shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, chest pain and/or tightness
Heart: weak pulse, dizziness, faintness
Headache, nasal congestion, watery eyes, sweating
confusion
loss of consciousness
O2 delivery, percentage given per L/min
xygen delivery devices such as a nasal cannula, venturi mask, and high-flow nasal cannula can deliver varying FiO2. A patient breathing ambient air is inhaling a FiO2 of 21%. Oxygen delivery devices determine the flow rate and FiO2 based on predicted equipment algorithms. The conventional prediction model states that for every liter of oxygen supplied, the FiO2 increases by 4%. Therefore, a nasal cannula set at a 1 L/min flow rate can increase FiO2 to 24%, 2 L/min to 28%, 3 L/min to 32%, 4 L/min to 36%, 5 L/min to 40%, and 6 L/min to 44%.
so, 6 L/min of a nasal cannula would provide 44% (while ambient air is at 21%).
aspirin overdose symptoms:
rapid HR
rapid breathing (*deep and rapid)
agitation
fever
confusion, collapse, coma
nausea, vomiting
bleeding (too much aspirin intake can cause GI bl over time)
hallucinations
drowsiness
Which of the following sets of vital signs would the EMT MOST likely encounter in a patient with acute cocaine overdose?
BP, 200/100 mmHg; pulse, 150 bpm.
- Nitroglycerin, when given to patients with cardiac-related chest pain:
relaxes the walls of the coronary arteries
albuterol is generic name for
ventolin
a ptnt is U after overdosing on aspirin, most likely resps will be:
rapid and shallow (incorrect)
deep , rapid
slow, deep
slow, shallow
deep, rapid
pulse oximetry :
incorrect: caution must be exercised when using on ptn with carbon mono poisoning
unlike an automatic implantable cardiac defib (AICD) , the external defib vest:
does not warn when a shock is about to be delivered (incorrect)
delivers high-energy shocks, similar to an AED
delivers high-energy shocks, similar to an AED
LFT ventricle has the thickest walls because it
pumps bl into the aorta
pumps bl to the lungs to be reo2’ed (incorrect)
pumps bl into the aorta
ventricular tachycardia causes hypotension because:
LFT venticle does not adequately fill w/blood
ptnt with angina/chest pain, you should assume AMI because:
angina and AMI present identically (incorrect)
flowmeter set at 6 Lpm the nasal cann will deliver how much o2?
44%
(ambient air is at 21%, for every addtnl liter, add +4 gets u in the range)
Which of the following physiologic actions does epinephrine produce when given for an allergic reaction?
Bronchodilation and vasodilation.
