Aitchison Flashcards
What did Aitchison discover
Three stages in which children acquire vocabulary
What are the three stages (in order)
Labelling
Packaging
Networking
What is the labelling stage
The general understanding of what each word means. The child relates the sounds of the word to the object they are describing. (mummy for the child’s mother)
What is the packaging stage
Explores the extent to which the label can stretch.
Very closely linked to over/underextention
(will explore the names of other four legged animals)
What is the networking stage
Starts to make connections and relationships between different labels.
Such as opposites and similarities
What theory does this support
Innateness
What does this also show
Active and deductive learning
A child is working things out to make sense and is making connections for themselves.
