Airframe Systems and Components (Fire Protection) Flashcards
In what area of an aircraft would you find a carbon monoxide detector?
In cabins and cockpits, they are placed where they are easily visible
what color does a carbon monoxide detector change to when carbon monoxide fumes are present?
silica turns from yellow to a shade of green , other types change from tan to gray to black
what are two types of smoke detectors?
Visual and photoelectric
where are smoke detectors used in the aircraft?
Cargo and baggage compartment, and the lavatory
how are thermal switch is wired in thermal switch fire detection system?
Switches are wired in parallel with each other but in series with a warning lights
describe operating principle of thermal switch fire detection system?
Thermal switches are heat sensitive unisex complete the circuit at a certain temperature.
describe operating principle of a continuous loop fire detection system.
Continuous loop consist of one or more wires embedded in a ceramic core inside of a conductor too. In case of fire or overheat, the ceramic cores resistance drops, allowing current to flow between the signal wire and conductive tube, lighting a warning light.
how does a thermocouple fire detection system different from a thermal switch?
A thermocouple depends upon the rate of rise temperature and will not give a warning when engine overheats slowly or a short circuit develops
what are the two types of fire extinguishing systems?
Conventional and HRD (High rate of discharge)
what type extinguishing agent is usually found in an HRD system?
Halon 1301 is the most common
what type extinguishing agent is usually associated with a conventional type extinguishing system?
CO2
what is the purpose of the yellow desk in a CO2 fire extinguishing system?
it indicates which bank of bottles has been empty through normal discharge.
how can you determine the charge of CO2 extinguisher?
by weighing it
in a turbine engine Freon (halon) on fire extinguishing system how are bottles discharge?
squib is detonated electrically breaking frangible disk
how is a Freon fire extinguishing system protected from temperature rises in excess of set limits?
System is equipped with a thermal fuse that will melt at high temperature conditions and will blow the red discharge indicator disc.
