Why do Aircraft have letters and numbers preceding their name?
Aircraft Reporting Names have a letter to indicate its role which proceeds the variant type.
E.g. Hawk T2
Hawk is the aircraft.
T indicates that it is a trainer.
2 indicates that it is Mark 2 (the newer updated version).
What does AEW stand for?
Airborne Early Warning
E.g. Sentry
What does C stand for?
Transport (think of C for Cargo)
E.g. C130 Hercules.
What does E stand for?
Electronic.
What does F stand for?
Fighter.
E.g. F35 Lightning.
What does GR stand for?
Ground Attack Reconnaissance.
E.g. Tornado GR4. (no longer using)
What does HAR stand for?
Helicopter Air Rescue.
What does HC stand for?
Helicopter Cargo.
E.g. Chinook.
What does HT stand for?
Helicopter Training
What does MR stand for?
Marine Reconnaissance. E.g. Nimrod MR2.
What does R stand for?
Reconnaissance.
E.g. Sentinel R1, Shadow R1.

Tanker.
