aims & hypotheses Flashcards
What is the definition of aim?
What the researcher is attempting to prove or find out by conducting researcher
What is the definition of hypothesis?
A prediction made by a researcher regarding the outcome of their research
What are the different types of hypothesis?
Alternate, experimental (type of alternate), null, correlational, one-tailed, and two-tailed
What is the definition of an alternate hypothesis?
A statement that there will be a ‘significant difference (or) relationship’ between the variables - that is used for all research methods and can be one or two-tailed
What is the definition of an experimental hypothesis?
A statement that there will be a ‘significant difference’ between the variables - this is a type of alternate hypothesis specifically for experiments that can be one or two-tailed
What is the definition of a null hypothesis?
A statement that there will be no ‘significant difference (or) relationship’ between variables - this can be used for all research methods
What should be the last sentence in every null hypothesis?
Any difference found is due to chance.
What is the definition of a correlational hypothesis?
A statement that there will be a ‘relationship’ which can be both alternate or null
What is different about correlations compared to other research methods?
Correlations show a relationship but all other research methods show a difference or effect
What is the definition of a one-tailed hypothesis?
Predicts the direction of the difference e.g., increase or decrease
What is the definition of a two-tailed hypothesis?
Predicts that there will be a difference but does not predict the direction e.g., there will be an effect
What should variables be in every hypothesis?
