Pathways in the Health Science Cluster

A

When you were younger, kids probably always talked about being a “doctor” one day. What other additional jobs do you think fall under this category? There are several different career pathways you can follow and loads of different careers that fall under this large umbrella.

17

The biotechnologist from our story will fall under this career pathway. Other careers such as medical scientists who study diseases fall into this one as well. Really, it covers anyone who uses research skills to understand health and disease! If you enjoy asking questions and trying to find answers, this may be the career path for you.

Biotechnology encompasses a large group of scientific professions in the Health Science Cluster.

18
Q

Diagnostic Services Pathway

A

Have you ever had an x-ray taken or had your blood drawn? Well, after those procedures, your x-rays or blood were transported to a medical professional who looked at them to make sure you were healthy. These professionals are in the diagnostic services pathway. Radiology technicians are part of the Diagnostic Services pathway.

19
Q

Health Informatics Pathway

A

This is the pathway for people who want to work in the health field but love technology and information. Did you know there are databases that connect the health information of patients so that doctors all across the country can view it in real time? Quite an undertaking if you ask me! Professionals in health informatics like medical secretaries, medical transcriptionists, and medical records technicians keep up with all of this data so that doctors can use it to make important decisions.

Medical receptionists provide valuable support services to patients and are under the umbrella of the Health Informatics pathway.

20
Q

Support Services Pathway

A

Like those in health informatics, support services careers in the Health Science field help doctors and other health providers do their jobs well. You might want to take a look at careers like a hospital orderly, phlebotomist, or pharmacy aide if this kind of behind-the-scenes work appeals to you. Jobs in this pathway can be a bit more entry-level, so they are a good place to look when you are just beginning your career!

A phlebotomist takes people’s blood to pass along to the lab for analysis and is part of the Support Services pathway.

Therapeutic Services Pathway

A

When you think of “therapy,” you might imagine lying on a couch telling a stranger all of your deepest secrets—but really, this job (psychiatrist) is just one type of therapy in the health sector. Other careers include highly-skilled and highly-paid doctors like surgeons who need a medical degree and advanced training all the way to registered nurses, who can begin working with an associate degree. Other interesting careers in the pathway include art and music therapists. Who said arts and sciences can’t work together!

The rewarding career of nursing falls under the Therapeutic Services pathway.
