Agression Flashcards
aggression vs assertion
> aggression is when an individual purposely harms or injures their opponent - outside the rules
> Assertion is when an individual uses force within the rules to gain an advantage but not to hurt others
Causes of aggression
> poor performance > bad officiating > opposition or crowd > important game > naturally aggressive > over arousal
Instinct theory
> we have a natural trait to be aggressive
aggression builds up and is triggered when we are provoked
after aggression performer calms called catharsis
- doesn’t consider environment/social learning
- some people aren’t aggressive
Frustration aggression
> when a performer is stopped from achieving a goal they become aggressive
frustration always leads to aggression
aggression can lead to a further aggressive drive
can lead to retaliation
- some experience aggression even when goals havent been blocked
- some have goals blocked but don’t act aggressively
Aggressive cue (Berkowitz)
> when goal is blocked arousal increases and they experience frustration
this causes performer to be ready for aggression not just inevitable aggression
an aggressive act will only happen if cues or triggers are present
Social learning theory
> opposes trait theory based on bandura
aggression is by watching and copying significant others
if an aggressive act is successful or reinforced it is more likely to be copied
