Aggression And Prosocial Behavior Flashcards
Does alcohol reduce the ability of a person to monitor the consequences of their actions, increasing likelihood of aggression?
Yes
The amygdala is important in regulating aggression (it’s in the brain). True or false?
True
What is the observational learning explanations (‘modelling’) theory?
Sometimes people (particularly children) learn how to behave by watching others.
Important in relation to TV viewing. But link is complex, aggressive kids watch more violent TV, in turn makes them more aggressive
What is the Werther effect?
A high profile suicide spawns a sharp increase in the rate of suicide, as well as an increase in ‘accidental’ deaths
What is the social cognitive explanation?
Maladaptive thinking patterns. They see the world through a lens of mistrust. (They have dysfunctional & aggressive belief structures about the world).
What is the crowd behaviour and de-individuation theory?
In crowds we have anonymity, and so we have less fear of negative evaluation
What is the current thinking of de-individuation
People take on whatever role is implied by the situation/clothing (ie wear nursing uniform become more caring, black hoodie become more of a troublemaker)
What was Zimbardo’s prison study?
Fake jail, pretend guards started to behave like real guards/ pretend prisoners started to behave like prisoners. They became their role.

More common in rural areas and small towns
Men are more likely to show altruism towards strangers
