Children aged between three and five years old saw an adult behave aggressively towards a large inflatable doll (a Bobo doll).
They then had the chance to play with a range of toys, while observers watched their behaviour. Children showed significantly more imitation of a same sex model and boys performed more acts of aggression than girls.

What is the social learning explanation of aggression?
That aggression is a learned behaviour (e.g. through modelling, imitation etc).
What is a criticism of the social learning explanation of aggression?
That it overemphasises the influence of the environment and underestimates the importance of inherited or biological factors. Also, that it does not put enough emphasis on the human ability to reason or consider moral issues.
What did Patterson conclude from his 1967 study of the effects of negative reinforcement on aggressive behaviour?
That if aggressive behaviour is reinforced, it is more likely to be repeated.
