What is aggression?
Behavior that is intended to physically or mentally harm another person who does not want to be harmed
What does aggression rule out?
Emotions, thoughts, wishes, accidents
What is instrumental aggression?
Harm is inflicted as a means to a desired end
- if there was some other way to reach the desired goal, aggression would not occur
What are some examples of instrumental aggression?
Killing someone for money, self-defense
What is emotional aggression?
Harm is inflicted for its own sake (soley to harm another person)
What are some examples of instrumental aggression?
Jealous lover killing partner in rage, revenge
What is an example of culture and aggression?
Southern culture has ‘a culture of honor’ and men are more likely to show aggression for self-protection, against insults, and as a tool to teach children than northern men
