A

Activity Theory of ageing (Havighurst, 1961)
* Activity theory of ageing- explains the psychosocial ageing process looking at elderly people’s happiness in social interactions
* This theory emphasizes the importance of ongoing social activity
* This theory suggests that a person’s self-concept is related to the roles held by that person
* The theory explains that to maintain a positive sense of self the person must substitute new roles for those that are lost because of age.

Q

explain the continuity theory of ageing

A
  • Older adults will usually maintain the same activities, behaviors and relationships as they did in earlier life
  • Maintenance if the continuity of lifestyle by adapting strategies related to past experiences
  • However, how realistic is this given that physical ageing is not preventable
  • Internal continuity- what applies to yourself
  • External continuity- more about the task, behaviors

Q

explain the link of culture and ageing

A

Culture and Ageing
* Culture cannot change the biological aspects of ageing, but it can influence the perceptions of the ageing process
* Perceptions of ageing influence societal behaviors and expectations towards older people
* Perceptions will vary between cultures
Cultural influences
* Issues with cultural research is it is often focused on western cultures
* Lockenhoff et al., 2009=investigated perceptions of ageing within 26 cultures. The consensus across perceptions = consistent increases in wisdom vs consistent decreases in the ability to perform everyday activities and found cultures with high SE development saw ageing less favorably
* Greater contact with older individuals can increase more positive perceptions- in collectivist cultures elderly people are not pushed aside
* National character stereotypes are strongly associated with ageing, irrespective of a cultures socioeconomic status

Q

disengagement theory of ageing

A

Refers to an inevitable process in which many of the relationships between a person and other members of society are severed & those remaining are altered in quality.
*Withdrawal may be initiated by the aging person or by society, and may be partial or total.
*It was observed that older people are less involved with life than they were as younger adults.
*As people age they experience greater distance from society & they develop new types of relationships with society.
*In America, there is evidence that society forces withdrawal on older people whetheror not they want it.
*This theory is recognized as the 1st formal theory that attempted to explain the process of growing older.
