Local government, self-rule, and local rulers who answer to European rulers.
Indirect Control
Foreign officials were brought in to rule, no self-rule or assimilation.
Direct Control
Provide governed people with needs without granting rights.
Paternalism
The idea is that local populations in time will adopt the European culture.
