men to vote, by advocating segregated houses, schools, transportation, and by limiting

allowed the slave to be captured and sent back to their master as long as they are in the
United States.

Segregation

- Northern hotels, taverns, and resorts would not allow black people to enter unless they
were a servant of a white guest. - African American had to sit in segregated sections when in churches and theaters.
- Ohio did not allow black people the use of state-supported poorhouses and insane
asylums. - African Americans could only ride in stagecoaches ifthere were no white passengers.
They were also not allowed in streetcars and they could not rent cabins on steamboats. - All African Americans were subject to segregation regardless ofthe wealth.
- Most northern cities had segregated neighborhoods for black people. Although a few
wealthy black people lived in white neighborhoods. - Many white people believed that having black neighbors led to lower property value.
- The conditions in the segregated neighborhoods were dreadful and it led to disease, infant
mortality, alcoholism, and crime.
