Aeromedical Factors Flashcards
What is hypoxia?
Lack of oxygen, symptoms are light-headed, euphoria, cyanosis. If you suspect hypoxia you should use oxygen if available, descend, and land. Usually caused by flying at a high altitude.
What is hyperventilation?
Lack of carbon dioxide characterized by rapid breathing. You should slow breathing consciously or breathe into a paper bag. Usually caused by stress or anxiety.
What is carbon monoxide poisoning?
Something you are likely to get if the exhaust has leak inside the shroud from which we get heat. Symptoms are like hypoxia, hallmarked with headache and nausea. If you experience any of these, turn off the heat open the vents and land.
What is I’M SAFE?
A pilot’s personal checklist for evaluating the pilot’s fitness to fly. Illness Medication Stress Alcohol Fatigue Emotion/Eating
How should you scan at night?
Use off-center viewing. The rods in your eyes are located around the cones and are better suited for detecting peripheral movement at night.
Discuss the optical illusions.
Narrower than usual runway looks like you are higher than actual. Wider than usual looks lower than you are. Up-sloping looks like you are higher than actual. Down-sloping looks like you are lower. Featureless looks like you are higher than actual. Rain and haze makes it look like you are farther away. False horizon, you fly in an attitude other than straight and level.
What are the recommendations for flight after SCUBA diving?
Wait 24 hours after SCUBA diving. If it was an uncontrolled dive and flight is below 8000’, wait 12 hours.
When not enough oxygen enters the body this is known as:
Hypoxic Hypoxia
When the blood can not carry enough oxygen, this is known as:
Hypemic Hypoxia
When there is not enough blood flow to deliver oxygen, this is known as:
Stagnent Hypoxia
When oxygen is delivered to the cells, but the cells can not use it, this is known as:
Histotoxic hypoxia
