Aerobic Exercise Prescription Flashcards
Aerobic Exercise Indications
1) Reduced cardiorespiratory endurance
2) Primary/secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease
Mode of Aerobic Exercise
Rhythmic activities taht use large muscle groups that can be performed continuously and safely: i.e. walking, hiking, running, biking, cross-country skiing, skating, stair climbing, swimming, etc)
How is appropriate Intensity of Aerobic Exercise determined? (aka Target HR Zone, THR)
Established from lower and upper HR limits depending on pt’s age, fitness level, health status, and goals using 1 of 2 formulas: HRmax or HRR/Karvonen Formula
HR max formula for Target HR
Lower THR = HRmax * 55%
Upper THR = HRmax * 90%
HRR aka Karvonen Formula for Target HR
Lower THR = [(HRmax-HRrest) x 40%)] + HRrest
Upper THR = [(HRmax-HRrest) x 85%)] + HRrest
Duration of Aerobic Exercise
20-60 minutes depending on intensity (moderate is recommended)
Frequency of Aerobic Exercise
3-5 days per week
Normal Cardiorespiratory Response to acute Aerobic Exercise (4)
1) Inc O2 consumption from inc CO, inc blood flow, and inc O2 utilization in skeletal muscles
2) Linear increase in SBP wit increasing workload (8-12 mmHg per MET)
3) No change or moderate decrease in DBP
4) Inc RR and tidal volume
