Aerobic and anaerobic respiration Flashcards
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration using oxygen
Is Respiration breathing?
Noooooooooooo! Respiration is the process of releasing energy from glucose, which happens in almost every cell!
In which organelle does the process of respiration happen?
Mitochondria
Glucose + oxygen —–> what + what + Energy
Carbon dioxide + water
What do organisms use energy for? (3 marks)
Building up larger molecules like proteins from amino acids
Muscle contraction
Keeping a constant body temperature
And if you are triple - active transport!!
When we use our muscles more, what do we need to get to our cells?
Glucose and oxygen
What happens to our breathing rate when we exercise?
It increases and you breathe more deeply
What happens to your heart when you exercise?
It beats faster, delivering more blood which contains the glucose and oxygen which is needed for respiration
A fit person will have a higher/ lower heart rate than an unfit person
Lower
A fit person will have a longer/ shorter recovery period than an unfit person
Shorter
What is the chemical which animals store glucose as?
Glycogen
Where is glycogen stored
Liver and muscles
What is anaerobic respiration?
When your body cannot supply enough oxygen to your muscles they can respire anaerobically ( without oxygen)
When you respire anaerobically what builds up?
Lactic acid
What effect does lactic acid have on your muscles?
Makes them fatigue
