Aerobic and Anaerobic Flashcards
What does Aerobic mean?
Aerobic
- When O2 is present
- Long distance events (3mins+)
- Low/Moderate intensity
- Enough O2 to supply muscles
Glucose + Oxygen –> Energy + Water + CO2
What does Anaerobic mean?
Anaerobic
- When O2 is not present
- Short events (Up to 30 seconds)
- High intensity events
- Demand is too high (Oxygen debt)
- Event finishes before oxygen can reach muscles
Glucose –> Energy + Lactic Acid
Define Oxygen Debt
Oxygen Debt
- Lack of Oxygen + build up of Lactic Acid causes fatigue
- Anaerobic systems require O2 to restore them
- When a person stops exercising, they will breathe deeply + rapidly to restore O2 levels in the body
Gives a sporting example of Aerobic exercise
A sporting example of Aerobic exercise is a Marathon runner
- Long distance, Moderate intensity
Give a sporting example of Anaerobic exercise
A sporting example of Anaerobic exercise is a Boxer
- Short duration, High intensity
