AED for 8+ Flashcards
what does AED stand for and what is it?
automated external defibrillator; gives shock to stop abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
how to place aed pads?
anterolateral: one below R collarbone and one on L side of L nipple, below armpit. AP: one in center of chest and one in center of back; or one b/w tip of breastbone and L nipple and one on back below L shoulderblade
When to clear victim?
during analysis and before & during shock delivery
how to give aed on hairy chest?
razor off hair or wax off hair with first set of AED pads
how to give aed on pregnancies?
like nml. shock won’t hurt baby
how to give aed on ppl w/ transdermal medicine patches?
remove patch w/o getting it on to you (use gloves or barriers), wipe off area dry, then proceed like nml
how to give aed on ppl w/ pacemakers and A fib?
avoid placing aed pads on those things and proceed like nml
pVT vs VF
pulseless ventricular tachycardia - when ventricles contract too fast –> can’t feel pulse vs ventricular fibrillation - heart’ electrical activity becomes chaotic –> heart muscles quiver in fasts unsynchronized way –> heart doesn’t pump blood
how to give aed on wet ppl?
wipe off areas that are wet and/or move them to a dry area and proceed like nml
what happens if no shock = advised or after any shock delivery from AED?
resume chest compressions and high quality CPR
how to give aed on infants <1y?
manual defibrillator = preferred. otherwise use regular AED with peds pads. if no peds pads, use adult pads w/ pediatric dose attenuator. if no attenuator, make sure pads do not touch each other
how to use AED
1) open the case and turn the AED on
2) peel backing away and place pads on bare chest
3) clear victim for analysis, before and during shock delivery
4) cont CPR and chk AED q 2 min for shock rhythm
