physical development - growth
don’t increase height but can gain weight b/c increased body fat or (for active adults) muscle growth, eyesight poorer (glasses), men can lose hair, greying nearing end of stage
physical development - menopause
est. start 45-55 yrs, stops ovulating + menstruating + becomes infertile, hot flushes (temp. rises for 5 mins), night sweats (sleep disturbance), mood swings, headaches (b/c of production change of sex hormones - less produced)
define menopuase
loses ability of conceiving a child
physical development - motor
early stage = increased strength, stamina, co-ordination (but decline at approx 30+ yrs), motor skills used more on daily situations e.g. work are quite well maintained in healthy people, later stage = joints less flexible/stiffer
intellectual development
most learn quite little + lose curiosity (excl. scientists/similar) so skills tend to not increase (exceptions inc. YA who continue to study in uni.), practical knowledge, experience of situations increases,more sensible decisions than adolescents (wisdom builds up over the years), some can act unwise throughout stage
emotional development
self-concept develops more (inc. family, work + achievements), less self-conscious + more confident through exp., usually less concern w/ body image than adolescence esp. people in stable relationships, more stable + control over feelings
social development
at early stage long-term partnerships e.g. marriage (usually based sexually) + lots have children + develop skills to look after them + attachment to them (urge to protect them), develop work relationships/friendships
