Adrenergic Drugs Flashcards
Isoprenaline
B agonist
Increase strength and rate of the heart contraction. Relax bronchial SM, several muscle vasculature and GI tract
Tachycardia, hypotension, flushing, headache
IV
Sulbutamol/ Terbutaline
Salmeterol ( long acting)
B2 agonist
Relaxation of Bronchial SM, blood vessel. Decrease duration of skeletal muscle contraction and increase glycolysis and glycogenolysis
Hypotension,Flushing, skeletal muscle tremor, tachycardia( palpitation), disturb carbs metabolism
Over use leads to tolerance, drug interaction with B blocker, correct use of anti inflammatory min use of B agonist, banned during competition
Oral or IV
Dobutamine
B1 agonist
Increase the tone of the heart contraction.
Tachycardia, increase or decrease blood pressure
Metoprolol
B1 antagonist
Reduce in heart rate, renin release, reduction in cardiac output. Oxygenation is improved.
For hypertension
Con: hypotension, heart failure
SE: cardiac failure, at high dose: hypoglycaemia, bronchospasm
Propranolol
B antagonist
Reduce heart rate, renin release. Reduce cardiac output. Myocardium better oxygenated.
Contract Bronchial SM. Decrease insulin level
For hypertension, glaucoma
Con: hypotension, asthma, hypoglycaemia
SE: cardiac failure, bradycardia, hypoglycaemia, bronchospasm
Phenylephrine
A1 agonist
Vasoconstriction: Redistribute local blood flow.
For nasal congestion.
Con: antidepressant, cardiac condition
SE: hypertension, tachycardia
Clonidine
A2 antagonist
Inhibit release of NorAdr, decrease blood pressure and heart rate.
For: hypertension (not anymore!!!), glaucoma, menopausal flushing
Con: bradyarrhythmia
SE: dizziness, dry mouth
Prazosin
A1 antagonist
Inhibit vasoconstriction, decrease in total peripheral resistance, inhibit SM contraction.
For hypertension, prostatic hyperplasia, raynauld’s disease.
Con: hypotension
SE: hypotension, blurred vision, nasal congestion, tachycardia, priapism
Tamsulosin
A1a
Inhibit SM contraction. Relaxation of prostate SM
For: prostatic hyperplasia
Con: hypotension
SE: abnormal ejaculation ( dopamine and serotonin)
